The Art of Winning on the Basketball Court

How does your team become a winner? Research suggests
that home teams will always have an advantage over the away
teams. This could be due to many reasons, the main one
being that the home team feels comfortable in their own
surroundings, doesn't have far to travel and could possibly
have friends and family in the crowd watching. It doesn't
necessarily mean that the home team plays particularly
well, therefore the away team needs extra encouragement and
must approach the game with a positive attitude in order to
overcome the disadvantage. The team must believe that it
can win in any situation, and play to its very best ability.
A change of heart is required but what can a coach do to
help the process?
1~We all work better when we are in a routine. So, make
the pre-game warm up the same whether you are home or away.
Give the players their itinerary in plenty of time and make
sure that it is clear and concise. Encourage the more
experienced players to talk with the younger ones and let
them know what to expect in order to avoid unfortunate
distractions and surprises. Big teams will even send a
scout to video the hotel, training facilities and court of
the away team so that the team will feel comfortable and be
able to visualize every aspect of the game.
2~The home team will have most of the support and will
obviously feel 'at home'! Make sure that your team stay
calm and focussed and are able to retain their composure
whatever may happen. You should know absolutely everything
about the opposition and train your team to be able to
block out the noise of the crowd. Take the initiative from
the very first moment. Some things that happen will be out
of your control, for instance, transport problems but the
team need to be able to show composure. Such a detached and
controlled attitude will be the most difficult thing for
the opposition to deal with.
3~Enjoy! If your team can develop this absolute control
and confidence they will be well on the way to initialising
a warrior attitude which means that wherever your players
are, however strong the competition and their supporters
are and however unreasonable the referee is you know that
the effort that your players give will be unsurpassed.
They'll fight with pride against what can sometimes seem
like the world and whatever the outcome, they'll emerge
with their heads held high, with respect from even the
opposition's supporters and a great sense of self worth.
