Are the kids tearing up your furniture to the point that the
thought of getting new furniture scares you? Is that new
dining room set out of the question? Fear not, friend,
there may be a solution.
If you thought that having a family meant putting your
decorating skills and ideas on the back burner then you
just haven't been opening your eyes to the stylish ideas
designers use to liven up their own homes and their
client's homes, even with children (and pets) around!
The task of furnishing your home can be made a whole lot
easier just by employing the right materials. There are
some wonderful possibilities to consider for your family.
Have you always loved leather? Well it's not only great for
minor spills that are quickly wiped off, it also wears well,
even gaining a beautiful patina with time and use. Leather
does not collect pet hair as a cloth couch or chair would,
and crumbs and dirt will wipe off easily.
Wicker furniture is reasonable and easy to care for. Set
it off with an assortment of baskets for keeping magazines
and "stuff" and you've got an attractive setting. A basket
can be used for numerous things, inside or out.
Ultrasuede is a favorite for a fabric upholstery. It can be
used in the more formal rooms of the house, yet it is easy
to care for. It won't stain or fade and many stains can be
easily wiped clean. Add a basket or two for accenting and
you can put together a nice ensemble.
If you have children or pets, consider using slipcovers to
protect your furniture. Many decorators use them to protect
or hide everyday wear and tear by using a stripe or other
pattern. They are easily removed for more formal use and
can be easily cleaned and re-applied.
Just remember to stay away from delicate materials like
velvet and silk, especially if you have kids around. They
stain easily and are hard to clean.
If your carpets are a light shade, consider area rugs to
protect them. If the surface is hard and slippery, use a
pad underneath the area rug to keep them from moving.
Finally, use a protective finish or coating on wood
furnishings. That will protect them against most spills or
marks that inevitively happen.
When making decision about decorating your home, a little
time spent researching different materials can make a world
of difference.
